General Information:You may not heard of ACT or the Arts Council of Tamworth, but you know that Odetta, Jean Redpath, the Shaw Brothers, Patty Larkin, Greg Brown, Mose Allison, Maria Muldaur and plenty of other "name" performers have appeared in Tamworth over the last forty-plus years. You've heard classical music, from medieval viols to contemporary piano, on winter evenings. You've enjoyed African drums, Scottish bagpipes and Peruvian flutes. You've seen original art on display, or noticed a group of kids flying handmade kites in the Brett School parking lot. All those events are courtesy of ACT, the Arts Council of Tamworth. ACT has been producing events and performances in Tamworth and its environs since 1967. The incorporated nonprofit organization grew out of the town's bicentennial celebration in 1966. That spectacular observance involved a wide range of musical and visual arts offerings, including a show of children's art from "Tamworths" in the US, Great Britain and Australia. The planning and execution of the celebration brought together a group of local residents who realized there was a need for a permanent organization to support art and music in and around Tamworth. Now, well into the 21st century, ACT continues to offer wonderfully diverse performances each year, creative workshops and shows for children, an annual summer art show and more. Please visit www.artstamworth.org to find out about all our activities, purchase tickets, be inspired by the power of art in our lives and hear about other local arts offerings.
