History and Anecdotes
: Hale’s Location is named for Samuel Hale, an American Revolutionary who taught school in New Hampshire in the mid eighteenth century.  It seems that Hale had done King George III a good turn or two prior to 1745 and the King gave Hale about 1200 acre of New Hampshire land to be his as long as he made pine trees available to the Royal Navy for ship masts.  He was also asked to pay a small pittance in rent -  one shilling and one ear of corn per year for every 100 acres in the tract.  Hale took the side of the Revolution in the 1770’s but his family had already set up several homesteads in the region around what is now Conway, New Hampshire.  The King of course lost the war, and the Hale clan stayed on site, although Sam moved down to Portsmouth where he taught school.  The family cared for the location in compliance with the grant.  The location is today divided between the White Mountain National Forest, several private camps, and the new Hale’s location Country Club which began in 1984.
