20th Annual Oktoberfest

Attitash Mountain Resort will host its 20th Annual Oktoberfest on Columbus Day weekend, October 8 and 9 at the Bear Peak base area. The two-day event will feature traditional Bavarian music from the world renowned King Ludwig's Band, authentic German fare as well as a Biergarten featuring 19 different local and regional breweries serving a host of seasonal beers and ciders.

Oktoberfest, a family tradition at Attitash, features a wide variety of activities for kids and adults. Within the festival grounds children have their own Kinderplatz tent complete with arts & crafts, face painting and other mini-games organized by the Mount Washington Valley Children's Museum. Outside, youngsters will also find a giant inflatable obstacle course to play in.

For the adults, a staple of the Attitash Oktoberfest is the Samuel Adams Stein Hoist Competition. A competition of strength and concentration, participants over 21 years of age will attempt to hold a full beer stein with a straight arm parallel to the ground for as long as possible. Whoever can last the longest will win an overnight stay in Boston and a tour of the Samuel Adams Brewery. Rounding out the adult activities are the keg toss competition, corn hole boards, and slacklining.

Mystery Book Club

Mystery Book Club

White Birch Books Mystery Book Club

The Mystery Book Club meets at White Birch Books on the second Thursday of every month. A small group, discussion books range from historical mysteries to contemporary thrillers. Books are usually picked a couple months in advance, but sometimes the group goes crazy and lines up books for several months. As with all of our groups, the Mystery Book Club is open to anyone interested and can be a great place to meet fellow readers. We’ve seen wonderful friendships form and grow while discussing murder and mayhem – as it should be.

One in a Million Boy by Monica Wood

Thursday, October 12, 7 p.m.

We are pleased to announce that this year’s book for One Book One Valley will be One in a Million Boy by Monica Wood.

The story of your life never starts at the beginning. Don't they teach you anything at school?

So says 104-year-old Ona to the 11-year-old boy who's been sent to help her out every Saturday morning. As he refills the bird feeders and tidies the garden shed, Ona tells him about her long life, from first love to second chances. Soon she's confessing secrets she has kept hidden for decades.

One Saturday, the boy doesn't show up. Ona starts to think he's not so special after all, but then his father arrives on her doorstep, determined to finish his son's good deed. The boy's mother is not so far behind. Ona is set to discover that the world can surprise us at any age, and that sometimes sharing a loss is the only way to find ourselves again.

We will be reading and discussing this book for our October Mystery Book Group and encourage anyone in our Thursday Night Book Group to join us at the bookstore on October 12 for our discussion. We will all meet at Kennett High School on Thursday, October 26 at 7pm to hear author Monica Wood speak and answer questions, followed by a book signing. We hope you can attend.
