North Conway Library presents 'History Of Cranmore Mountain' with Tom Eastman

May 16

North Conway Library presents 'History Of Cranmore Mountain' with Tom Eastman on May 16

The North Conway Public Library is pleased to invite you to the final program of its Thursday Night Program Series on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. at the Weather Discovery Center on Main Street in North Conway Village.

Conway Daily Sun reporter and Valley Fun co-editor Tom Eastman will talk about his new book “The History of Cranmore Mountain.”

This presentation and Tom’s book tell the story of Cranmore, the early ski school founder Carroll P. Reed (1905-1995), financier Harvey Dow Gibson (1882-1950), the Eastern Slope Inn, the snow trains, the Skimobile, the arrival of Austrian ski great Hannes Schneider (1890-1955) in February 1939 at Cranmore after being released from Nazi-held custody; his son, fellow U.S. Ski Hall of Fame member and former Cranmore owner Herbert Schneider (1920-2012), the Eastern Slope Ski Club, Toni Matt's legendary schuss of the Tuckerman Ravine Headwall in the 1939 American Inferno, and about Cranmore's transformation under new ownership into a year-round resort over the past two and a half years.

During his presentation, Tom will be showing many of the 70 vintage photographs that are all displayed in his book; many of them loaned by local photographers, the North Conway Public Library, and the New England Ski Museum.

There is no charge for the program, although donations are greatly appreciated. Refreshments will be served and coffee is generously donated by Frontside Grind of North Conway.

Please join Tom and the North Conway Library for a trip down Cranmore’s memory lane on Thursday May 16 at 7 p.m. at the Obs Weather Discovery Center.

Masons’ Breakfast to Benefit North Conway Library

May 19

Masons’ Breakfast to Benefit  North Conway Library on May 19

The Mount Washington Valley Masonic Lodge will host a breakfast buffet to benefit the North Conway Library on Sunday, May 19. The lodge is located above the movie theater in North Conway Village across from Schouler Park.

All you can eat pancakes, sausage, ham, corned beef hash, baked beans, potatoes, fresh fruit, chef attended omelet station, cereals, oatmeal, pastries, juices, tea, hot chocolate, and coffee are all on the menu, for a small donation to the hosted charity, the North Conway Library. Breakfast is served from 8 to 11 a.m., and the dining hall is handicapped accessible. The suggested minimum donation for this full breakfast buffet with homemade omelets and many other treats is $6 for adults and $4 for children 10 and under.

Proceeds raised will go directly to the North Conway Library. All of the costs are paid by the lodge and supported by the Valley Originals. The breakfasts are offered to any local non-profit charity in the area as a public service by the lodge.

The North Conway Library is a privately funded library that is free and open to the public. The library, located in North Conway Village, does not receive any regular funding from the town of Conway, the State of New Hampshire, or the federal government and therefore depends on donations, sponsors and fundraising programs like this.

The Library will also organize two 50/50-raffles, one held at the beginning of the breakfast for the early birds, and the other later in the morning.

The Masonic lodges throughout New Hampshire have been active members of New Hampshire communities for centuries. Each year they contribute tens of thousands of dollars to local communities. Access all upcoming events at the lodge’s website: mtwashingtonlodge.com .

The Seasons 1st Annual Reel Fun Fishing Derby

May 25

So we've got this pond...

On Saturday May 25th, The Seasons Resort in Bartlett, NH will be holding a little fishing derby at our very own roadside pond. The Seasons 1st Annual Reel Fun Fishing Derby will be open to all kids aged 12 and under, and all proceeds from the event will go directly to the Bartlett/Jackson Food Pantry.

First lines will be cast at 10AM, and we expect that we will be reeling 'em in up until 2PM. There are literally hundreds of trout swimming around in our pond, so we anticipate that this catch & release event will be a very active day for all the little anglers who participate.

The entry fee for the derby is $10, but if you bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the cause, entry will be just $5. All entrants will receive a commemorative t-shirt (i.e. something parents can proudly stuff into the memorabilia box  when the kids outgrow them!), and we will also be giving out prizes for the biggest fish, the smallest fish, and whatever other goofy category we can come up with.

Additionally, we will be grilling burgers and hot dogs throughout the course of the event, and the proceeds generated at the cookout will also go directly to the Food Pantry. And courtesy of our many generous sponsors, we will also be holding a raffle at the end of the event, where we will dole out all sorts of great prizes... Including the Grand Prize: a two-night stay at The Seasons Resort!

Basically, this is an event where everyone wins -- not just due to prizes & t-shirts, but because of the indelible memories that will be made.

And lastly (cue haunting music, preferably Scottish), according to local legend, there are two ENORMOUS fish lurking within these waters. We're talking creatures the size of the Loch Ness Monster! (*wink*) Should anyone happen to catch one of these beasts, there'll be a special prize involving one of our area's amazing restaurants. Can't say they'll have Loch Ness on the menu, but that's okay -- Loch Ness can be kind of gamey.

We only have a few key conditions, which are as follows:

1.) If you have kids interested in participating, please pre-register by sending us an email to 'marketing@seasonsnh.com' by Friday, May 17th, and give us the child's name, age, and shirt-size. If you don't use email, you can register by calling the front desk. Locally our number is (603) 374-2361, and long distance callers can reach us at (800) 332-6636.

2.) All participants must bring their own gear.

3.) All children must be supervised by an adult.

So there you have it! Tell your friends, and we'll see you out on the pond over Memorial Day Weekend!?

Alton Weagle Day

May 25

A celebration of all the firsts at the Mt. Washington Auto Road! Alton Weagle had a passion for Mt. Washington. To show his passion, he climbed the Mt. Washington Auto Road in a number of unique ways: by car, on foot, walking backwards, pushing a wheelbarrow full of sugar...just to name a few. This day honors his spirit and the spirit of all those from camels to unicycles to pogo sticks to autos who have been the first up the mountain. Raft NH's Opening Whitewater Rafting Weekend

May 25, 26, 27

Celebrate Memorial Day by whitewater rafting with Raft NH! May 25th is the first annual release of Pontook Dam.  Our Pontook Dam Class II & III Trip is a family friendly whitewater rafting adventure that goes along an absolutely gorgeous stretch of river and takes you through rapids that can get a bit technical depending on water level. Along this trip we'll play in the pour overs, try to catch some raft surfs, and nail a bunch of 2-3 foot breaking waves getting everyone in the boat soaked and leaving you exhilarated on a hot day. On the way down the river you'll see an active eagle's nest and osprey sightings are common. Don't be surprised if you see the occasional bear, moose, or deer along the riverbank! We keep our trips very laid back which ensures plenty of time to swim and play. This trip meets in Gorham, NH at 9:30AM with the shuttle departing promptly at 10AM. We will take two trips down the whitewater and return to base around 4:00pm. Light riverside snacks will be served on the trip and a catered hearty late lunch will be waiting for us (think fresh and hot pasta dishes, tossed fresh salads, seasonal vegetables, barbecue days and of course dessert)! Adult beverages and ice cream available for purchase to cap off your day. The cost of this adventure is $60 for those ages 13 and up, children 6 - 12 are $45.

Danny and the Deep Blue Sea

May 30, 31

Danny and The Deep Blue Sea revolves around the dilapidated lives of Danny and Roberta, two tortured strangers, who meet by chance in one of the many nameless sods in the Bronx. Danny is a broad, beastly man without direction or purpose; he is drowning in a sea of violence and rage. Roberta is a wilted barfly, desiccated shell of a woman; she is drowning in an ocean of pain and guilt.
