How to grow a giant pumpkin- Talk

April 18

How to Grow a Giant Pumpkin with Champion Pumpkin Grower Bruce Hooker

Want to know how to grow a Giant Pumpkin? If so, you should join the North Conway Library on Thursday, April 18 for its program featuring Bruce Hooker at 7 pm at the Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center on Main Street in North Conway Village.

Bruce has been growing giant pumpkins since 2003 with his first one weighing in at 247 lbs and his best pumpkin at 1521 lbs last year. He is on the board of the NH Giant Pumpkin Growers Association which is “dedicated to the sport of growing giant pumpkins in the spirit of learning, teaching, and cooperation” and he has had great success himself with one of his pumpkins winning the Goffstown Pumpkin Festival.

Bruce cannot tell you how to grow the next World Record, but he does think he can get you started in the right direction. There is no magic bullet to growing a giant pumpkin, just several things you have to do to the best of your ability and then hope mother nature gives a helping hand. Come let Bruce tell you how to successfully grow one of these giant wonders in your own backyard.

At the presentation you will also learn about the North Conway Library‘s Adopt-A-Pumpkin program and be able to sign-up to participate. For a $15 donation you will receive a pumpkin plant in a 6 inch pot with a blue ribbon pedigree, a birth certificate, and growing directions. Furthermore, it comes along with a Pumpkin Community newsletter and directions for entry to the Fryeburg Fair for hard core competitors!

The pumpkin starter plants and materials will be available in May, but you will be able to pre-order yours at the program and then will be contacted by e-mail or phone when your plant is ready for pick-up and adoption. Pumpkin plants are limited and competition is fierce, so reserve your plant early. Reservations can also be made at the North Conway Library by calling 356-2961.

Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 18. There is no charge for the program, although donations are greatly appreciated. Refreshments will be served and delicious coffee is generously donated by Frontside Grind of North Conway.

For more information about the presentation or the Adopt-a-Pumpkin program, contact the North Conway Library at 603-356-2961 or check www.NorthConwayLibrary.com
