MARCH 2013

EMS Randonee Night at Cranmore

March 1

Alpine ski touring, or randonée skiing, is increasingly popular in ski country, as ski equipment manufacturers produce sturdier, lighter, and more sophisticated ski gear that is equally efficient at free-heel climbs using climbing skins and descents in which the binding converts to hold the boot heel on the ski.

The 17th annual Hannes Schneider Meister Cup Race, to be held at Cranmore Mountain Resort March 2 & 3, will feature an untimed, social nighttime ski tour and dinner for skiers on randonée and telemark gear as part of the opening festivities on Friday evening, March 1.

The namesake of the race, Hannes Schneider, is considered to be the founder of ski instruction as it is still structured today, as well as an originator of the mountain resort industry. Schneider developed his techniques before the invention of ski lifts, and as a practiced and passionate backcountry skier in his native Arlberg region of Austria, used uphill alpine touring techniques daily.

In view of Schneider’s experience as a mountain soldier in the First World War, the Meister Cup also honors military skiers of the US Army. Units of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York and the Army Mountain Warfare School of Jericho, Vermont are expected to attend the event. Veterans of the World War II 10th Mountain Division will also be on hand, most of whom still recall their training days at Camp Hale, Colorado using randonée gear to climb on skis.

EMS, whose North Conway store is a valley center for backcountry skiing equipment, will sponsor the tour, and have up to 20 pairs of alpine touring demo skis and boots available at Cranmore. Reservations are strongly suggested for the limited demos, which will include gear from Dynafit, G3, Black Diamond and K2.

Beginning at 5 PM, the EMS randonée tour will ascend a route to be selected and marked by Cranmore patrollers, and follow a designated route down the mountain’s alpine trails. The Meister Hut at the summit of Cranmore will be open and hot chocolate available to participants. All skiers will be urged to make their descent by 7:00 PM so as not to miss the hearty alpine buffet that coincides with the opening reception of the Meister Cup in the newly redecorated Zip’s Café.

The entry fee for the EMS Randonée Night Tour is $25, and includes a gift bag assembled by EMS, buffet dinner, and complimentary demo equipment if sizes are available. For demo reservations call EMS at 603-356-5433. For event registration, call the Ski Museum at 800-639-4181 or e-mail staff@skimuseum.org.

[TITLE OF SHOW]

March 14, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24

Opening MARCH 14, 2013

[title of show] by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell

About the play, and the story:

“You’re reading the official blurb, or short summary, of [title of show]. Blurb. That’s a funny word. We spent a lot of time on this blurb so please read the whole blurb. [title of show] is a musical about two nobodies named Hunter and Jeff who decide to write a completely original musical starring themselves and their attractive and talented ladyfriends, Susan and Heidi. Their musical, [title of show], gets into the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and becomes a hit. Then it gets an off-Broadway production at the Vineyard Theatre, and wins three Obie Awards! Then (drumroll if you’ve got a drum) it’s announced that their musical is going to Broadway (hooray!) and people start seeing this blurb everywhere! They read that The New York Times called [title of show]“DELECTABLE ENTERTAINMENT! A postmodern homage to the grand tradition of backstage musicals like Babes in Arms, Kiss Me, Kate and A Chorus Line.” Fully intrigued, those people snatch up tickets and help make Hunter and Jeff’s life-long dream come true!” – [title of show] official website

Performances will be:

Thursday, March 14th and Friday, March 15th, and Sunday, March 17th at 7:30pm
Saturday, March 16th at 4:00pmThursday, March 21st and Friday, March 22nd, and Saturday, March 23rd at 7:30pm

Presentation: History of North Conway

March 21

"History of North Conway"

Please join the North Conway Library for its second event of the 2013 Thursday Night Program Series.

Local Historian Bob Cottrell will be presenting his interesting and informative evening of "The History of North Conway" on Thursday night, March 21, at 7 pm at the Mount Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center on Main Street in North Conway Village.

Bob Cottrell just recently published a visual history of North Conway, using hundreds of old photographs, maps, and memorabilia. In this program, he presents an armchair traveler's history of North Conway through a comparison of historic and modern photos and maps. Individuals are encouraged to bring their own stories and memories to share at the program.

Bob Cottrell is the curator of the Henney History Room at the Conway Public Library and serves as an independent history and museum consultant. In 1996 he became the founding Director of the Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm in Tamworth. He is also a speaker with the New Hampshire Humanities Council.

Come and see the History of North Conway through the eyes of Bob Cottrell on Thursday, March 21.  There will be time after the presentation for questions.

There is no charge for the program although donations are greatly appreciated. Refreshments will be served.  Coffee is generously provided by Frontside Grind of North Conway.

John Lennon Re-Imagined by The Nutopians: an Ensemble Presentation With special guest Devonsquare

March 23

Theater in the Wood, Intervale,NH

March 23 at 7:30pm
$28 advance/ $33 at the door or day of show

www.theaterinthewood.org

The Nutopians, a unique and compelling ensemble whose name was given to them by Yoko Ono herself, celebrates John Lennon’s genius and artistry with remarkably fresh treatments of some of his best known song compositions, often inspiring a whole new appreciation for the iconic music.

Created and led by Rex Fowler of Aztec Two-Step and Tom Dean of Devonsquare (also in the band is Devonsquare's Alana MacDonald), the ensemble’s breathtaking live show features poignant song narratives, and like their 2010 Independent Award-winning CD “Imagined” as well as their newest 2013 release "Lennon Re-Imagined," compelling lead singing and 3-part harmonies.

Known for their impeccable musicianship and original arrangements, the band members play an array of instruments that includes acoustic 6 & 12-string, electric and bass guitars, cello, violin, mandola, accordion, piano, chromatic harmonica and light percussion. They are thrilled to be touring with their new CD so close to home for many of the band members!

The Nutopians are proud to be affiliated with WhyHunger’s Artists Against Hunger & Poverty program, and a portion of their concert proceeds as well as CD sales are donated to the organization.

Devonsquare will also be performing!
