The Eight: Reindeer Monologues

M&D Playhouse

M&D Playhouse presents The Eight:  Reindeer Monologues by Jeff Goode, a dark, dark Christmas comedy.  Scandal erupts at the North Pole when one of Santa's eight tiny reindeer accuses him of sexual harassment.  As mass media descends upon the event, the other members of the sleigh team demand to share their perspectives, and a horrific tale of corruption and perversion emerges which seems to implicate everyone from the littlest elf to the tainted Saint himself.  With each deer's confession, the truth behind the shocking allegations becomes clearer and clearer...and murkier and murkier.

"That man has been a walking, talking, holly-jolly sex-crime-waiting-to-happen for years!"

This play contains adult themes not suitable for children.

The Eight:  Reindeer Monologues is presented December 6 - 16, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM with Sunday matinees at 4:00 PM.

Christmas Eve Sleepover Fundraiser

Harvest Hills Animal Shelter

The Christmas Eve Shelter Sleepover is a fundraiser dedicated to not only giving our shelter dogs a night where they can feel a little Christmas Eve normalcy, but it is a fundraiser that is earmarked for special projects, programs and other things that will make shelter life a little easier on the dogs and cats who are forced to call HHAS home. Each year, we try to find a local celebrity to spend the night with the animals. The sleepover exists simply to make the animals happier and more comfortable. Some previous projects funded by this fundraiser have included a ‘living room’-where potential adopters, volunteers, anyone can spend time with the dogs in an environment closely related to a home; and air conditioning for the dog kennels.

This year, local veterinarian Dr. Steve Caffrey, AKA Uncle Steve, will be spending the night at the shelter! If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Steve, here is a little more about him: Dr. Caffrey graduated from the University of Illinois in 1985, moved to Fryeburg and opened the Fryeburg Veterinary Hospital in 1987.  His mission was to create a warm and caring hospital with a high standard of care and personal service.  In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, especially in the outdoors.  He has 3 kids and quite the array of animals! Steve has been a part of the shelter since day one for over 30 years now, both as a veterinarian and volunteer.

The funds for this year’s sleepover are going to the extraordinary veterinary expenses we have incurred with our dog, Thor. Veterinary expenses are not something we usually fundraise specifically for, but this is an exceptional circumstance.

Thor was a 5 y/o German Shepherd mix that came to the shelter originally 3 years ago, was adopted out and then returned due to no fault of his own. This large boy was quite the character who loves to play ball and had won over a lot of the staff. One morning, Thor had to be rushed up to the vet for emergency surgery because he bloated, something common in big dogs. Bloat is a condition where the stomach twists and then fills with gas.  Thor had to have 2 surgeries in 2 days, the second one taking half of his stomach which was dead tissue. He had four days of 24-hour intensive care, but his stomach ruptured again, and it was unlikely he would survive the 3rdsurgery. With very heavy hearts we decided to let him cross the rainbow bridge and be pain free, forever running with his Jolly Ball.

Penguins and Polar Bears

1 Mount Washington Auto Road

Gorham, New Hampshire  03581

Penguins and Polar Bears nordic ski camp will focus on games and fun while teaching cross-country ski basics for kids ages six to eleven years old.

Both Penguins (ages 6 to 8) and Polar Bears (ages 9 to 11) start off the camp with games that teach and test stopping abilities. Red Light, Green Light is a favorite that can be adapted to experienced skiers with the challenge of skiing backward. Moose in the Trail gives further stopping practice while descending hills. Games of Predator and Prey played on one ski helps to equalize levels of skiing ability while providing the fun of a chase on skis. Capture the Flag, Ultime Frisbee, and Flag Tag are other game possibilities.

The trails at Great Glen that wind through the meadows and forest will be explored. Ascending to the Great Angel Cabin, a log warming hut, is a significant ski goal for campers and is rewarded by a fast a turn-filled trip down the Dragon Corridor trail. Campers will also search for the locations of Trail Tracker critters. Of course, the camp wouldn't be complete without a few runs on the classic tubing hill.
