25th Anniversary Celebration of "Return of the Pumpkin People"

On October 1, 2012 the Jackson Area of New Hampshire will be busy with the Return of the Pumpkin People.  These quirky unique and often down right hilarious Pumpkin People show up year after year sticking around until October 21st.  And… for the first time in 25 years the Jackson Area of New Hampshire is extending an invitation to Conway and North Conway businesses as well as residential properties to join       in and host a magical Pumpkin People display. 

This leaf peeper favorite event is guaranteed to surprise and entertain even the toughest of critics.  Only in the Jackson Area and Conway Areas of New Hampshire you will see live Pumpkin Faced People doing things you never thought possible; cooking, frightening you, taking photos of you, just staring from a tree, rocking, talking, driving, being tall, short, chunky, skinny, eating, skiing, running, diving, singing and so much more. 

So mark your calendars because this year is the YEAR you will want to come and see our Return of the Pumpkin People displays.

Maine's Blue Ribbon Classic! The largest agriculture fair in Maine! Eight days of entertainment and education for the whole family. A variety of livestock, draft show horses and ponies, pulling horses and oxen, a forestry research center, an agricultural exhibition center, crafts, a flower show, educational exhibitions and demonstrations, sheep dog trials and a huge parade on Saturday.  A thrilling midway with amusement rides and delicious food.  Live music all day, and nightly entertainment. A weekly trail running race series for all abilities and ages. Bike for Books - A Fall Foliage Mountain Bike Tour of the Mount Washington Valley

The North Conway Public Library will hold its 11th annual Bike for Books fund raiser on Saturday, October 6^th, 2012.

This scenic mountain bike tour of the Mount Washington Valley during peak fall foliage season offers different route options to accommodate various ability levels from novice to expert mountain biker and for children.  The big tour will begin between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. (your choice!) and is expected to conclude by early afternoon; shorter routes can be done in an hour or two. Every participant can choose their own route and own pace since this is a tour and not a race. The mountain bike trails will be well-marked, nobody will get lost. Food and drinks along the way and afterwards will be provided to all participants.

All bikers and volunteers will receive a book, a BPA-free bike bottle, and are invited to a free big lunch at the finish where Elvio's pizza, hot soup, desserts, and fresh coffee from Frontside Grind will be served. Many local businesses have donated numerous free giveaways and gift certificates to be given away on a random draw basis. 

Participants should be on a mountain bike with knobby, fat tires and children should have some off-road cycling experience. You can come and bike for an hour or all day; easy or difficult routes- it’s your choice!

A benefit for the Library’s children’s room, the registration fee is $20 for individuals, $35 for couples, $40 for families, and $10 for students 16 and under. Registration forms may be picked up at the North Conway Public Library or downloaded at www.NorthConwayLibrary.com .

Registration on the day of the event will be held at the Whitaker Woods Rec Building (“Whitaker Woods Homesite”) off Route 16 across from White Mountain Oil)  in North Conway from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

To commemorate the opening of the museum, there will be an inaugural exhibit, "On the Road to Jackson, a Journey through the White Mountains of New Hampshire." Exquisite 19th century paintings will be on loan from private collectors. The exhibit will run through January 6th, 2013.

American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

The journey to end breast cancer starts with a single step. Take that step with us at our American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in North Conway on Sunday, Oct. 14. Just a few hours of your time will help bring a lifetime of change for people facing breast cancer and their families.

This is a noncompetitive 3.5-mile walk open to all. We encourage students, families and friends, school groups, companies, and organizations to form teams. Many of our walkers have faced breast cancer. Some are newly diagnosed, some are still in treatment, many are years beyond their diagnosis. Others have lost loved ones to the disease while others have no personal connection but want to help ensure that progress against the disease continues.

Every Making Strides event is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community to honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about what we can do to stay well from breast cancer, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease with breast cancer research, information and services, and access to mammograms for women who need them.

We have a new venue this year - the Whitaker Woods Homesite at 2829 White Mountain Highway. Registration, opening and closing ceremonies, and our walk start will be here. Our 3.5-mile route takes walkers through North Conway Village along Route 16 South to Depot Road, back north on the North/South Road to Mechanic Street to Pine Street and then into Whitaker Woods for the last 1.5 miles. An alternative 1.5-mile option also will be available.

Remember, Making Strides goes on rain or shine!

Mountain Garden Club Lunch & Learn

Mountain Garden Club Lunch & Learn, Monday, October 15, 2012 from 10:30 - 2:00 at the Red Fox Bar & Grille Restaurant, Route 16, Jackson, NH.  

Kerry Mendez, author, garden designer and consultant, will be talking about "Putting Gardens to Bed Now & Spring Wake Up."  Topics will include how and when to cut back your flowers, which plants shouldn't be cut back, winterizing roses, planting spring-blooming bulbs and more.  Her three books have been top sellers and there will be a book signing following the presentation. Registration starts at 10:30 with a brief club business meeting, followed by lunch and the program at 11:30.

An overview of Chamber's Program for Action for the year ahead will also be unveiled at this meeting.
