Benefit "Soup and Songs" Concert to Support Recovery

United Methodist Church, Center Conway, NH (East of Mill Street)


A benefit concert to support recovery services in Mt. Washington Valley featuring music by Bennett and Perkins with special guest Taylor Whiteside. Doors open at 6 pm. Show starts at 7 pm. Come early for a potluck dinner featuring scratch-made soups and stews and pick your own hand-thrown pottery bowls crafted by local artisans. Tickets are $25/person. All proceeds benefit MWV Supports Recovery and Memorial Hospital's New Life Prenatal Program - moving forward from addiction.

In conjunction with the Appalachian Mountain Club, Great Glen Trails offers you the chance to really get to know Pinkham Notch, with a FREE tour (trail pass is required). When you ski with a naturalist, you will learn about the flora and fauna that make our corner of the world so special.

 

You'll scout for tracks in the snow and learn about the different trees in the Glen. While listening for distinct bird calls, you'll truly begin to understand how the ecosystem works in Pinkham Notch. Tours are FREE with a trail pass.

Great Glen Trails Bill Koch League - Kids in 1st -8th grade

For 1st through 8th graders, the Great Glen BKL* Club is a weekly program that emphasizes the fun of skiing, making new friends, and learning and improving skiing skills.

(*BKL: Bill Koch League, a regional youth ski program, is named after Bill Koch, the first U.S. Olympic medalist in cross-country skiing.)

The Club meets Sunday afternoons from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
Head Coach: Sue Wemyss, Great Glen Ski School Director, 1984 Olympian, over 25 years teaching & coaching skiers 

Activities include:

  • Fun games on skis
  • Trail skiing
  • Hunts & Obstacle courses
  • Junior Sprints

Great Glen Trails - Nordic Meisters

It’s our 24th year! Thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs! The series consists of eight weeks of timed runs with the six best times selected for series-end standings. With an adjustment system, all ages can compete on a level playing field. Check in every week at the rentals desk on the first floor to get your bib number. Start at the timing building in the stadium area between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:45 pm. All participants must check in with the volunteer timing crew prior to starting their timed runs. All runs must be completed by 4:00 pm. Results are emailed and posted on the website Tuesday evening and published in the Conway Daily Sun on Fridays.

Choose between the long (5.3km) or short (2.7km) course in the classic or skate technique—or ski them both.

An awards party/potluck will be held on Friday, March 15 at 5:30pm. The top three skiers in each class will receive an award. All participants completing six out of eight weeks are entered into a prize raffle. (Must be present to win, or have a really good friend willing to pick it up.) You don’t need to be fast to win your share of the prize pool!

The Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center’s “Bradley Backstage” concert series presents the Al Hospers & Friends Jazz Band at 7:30 pm. Local bassist Al Hospers will be performing a concert of original jazz tunes, along with an eclectic mix of re-imagined covers. It's a retrospective of his 52-year career as a journeyman musician. The program will feature pianist Jed Wilson, Mike Sakash on saxes, and Craig Bryan on drums—all from the acclaimed Bradley Jazz Collective. They will be joined by long-time collaborators and friends Jeff Loewer on vibraphone/percussion and guitarist Jarrod Taylor. Bradley Backstage concerts 'flip' the theater and seat the audience on stage with the performers, creating a much more intimate and unforgettable live concert experience. The Met Opera Live in HD presents Adriana Lecouvreur at 1:00 pm. Soprano Anna Netrebko joins the ranks of Renata Tebaldi, Montserrat Caballé, and Renata Scotto, taking on—for the first time at the Met—the title role of the real-life French actress who dazzled 18th-century audiences with her on-and offstage passion. The soprano is joined by tenor Piotr Beczala as Adriana’s lover, Maurizio. The principal cast also features mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili and baritone Ambrogio Maestri. Gianandrea Noseda conducts. Sir David McVicar’s staging, which sets the action in a working replica of a Baroque theater, premiered at the Royal Opera House in London, where the Guardian praised the “elegant production, sumptuously designed …” $26-Adults, $23-Seniors, $18-Students. Experience the wonder of a nighttime winter walk. Join a Naturalist from the Appalachian Mountain Club on a guided snowshoe tour. We will use our senses (and no flashlights) to navigate the trails while listening for owls calling and exploring our senses.

Women’s Winter Escape at Great Glen is a unique chance to learn and take part in a variety of activities with other women in small groups, providing for personalized attention from expert instructors.

The activities include a variety of ski clinics for classic and skate techniques, beginner through advanced, snowshoeing led by a naturalist, yoga; snow tubing, pre- and post-activity stretching, lunch, and an après ski wine and cheesegathering with discounted shopping in the Great Glen Outfitter Shop. Women’s Winter Escape is limited to twenty participants, ensuring a low instructor to student ratio for maximum learning.

All women will make their clinic selections at Saturday morning check-in on January 13. Participant numbers are limited in each clinic, to assure personalized attention and instruction during clinics. 

The following day, Sunday, January 14, Great Glen hosts an equipment demo, with ski and snowshoe products from Atomic, Fischer, Rossignol, Salomon, Swix and Tubbs available to take out and test on the trails. Participants in Saturday’s Women’s Winter Escape will receive their free trail pass for Sunday, enabling them access to the equipment demo with no extra charge.

The cost for Women’s Winter Escape is $89.  

This includes: On Saturday; trail pass, all clinics, ski and snowshoe rentals, a light continental breakfast, lunch, après-activity refreshments, shopping discount, and commemorative SKIDA headwear. On Sunday; trail pass, access to all demo equipment from the above visiting companies.

Mount Washington Auto Road - Sunrise SnowCoach Tours

Our experienced SnowCoach drivers will take you to treeline (weather permitting) at 4,200 feet on the Mt. Washington Auto Road for a chance to watch the sun rise. We leave promptly at 6:30 am in January and 5:45 am in February from the base lodge, and will not hold back the trip as we need to keep a tight schedule throughout the day for all our guests. 

Even if we don't actually get to the see the sun rise, you can be sure the early morning lighting at treeline will make for incredible and unforgettable scenes. Although you are riding in a heated van, you should dress warm as you will have an opportunity to get out of the SnowCoach for pictures and to experience the weather on Mount Washington.

The event will begin at noon (facility will open for use at 8:30am) and you can race or skin socially at your own pace -- to any distance you so choose. Those crazy enough to bag the summit will go 7.6 miles and earn bragging rights for the longest vertical foot descent back to the Auto Road Toll House (4,618 feet to be exact). Others can hit treeline at 4 miles (and warm-up in a SnowCoach). Whatever you do, we'll have hot showers, beer, food, live music, and prizes, all back at the Base Lodge from 4-7pm - all as part of one ticket.
