Fryeburg Academy Film Series: Sunrise with accompaniment by Brent ArnoldJanuary 18 Fryeburg Academy Film Series: Sunrise with accompaniment by Brent Arnold 7:30 PM at the Eastman Peforming Arts Center Arnold is a cellist and composer with a wildly unorthodox approach to his instrument, using live looping and processing, guitar-like fingerpicking and techniques from Arabic and African music to create his intricate and moving songs. His newest project is an original score for Sunrise, the legendary 1927 silent film by F.W.Murnau. He performs the entire score live, using only the cello and his battery of electronic tools to give an imaginative and haunting new perspective on the little-known cinematic classic.

Bretton Woods Geschmossel XC Ski RaceJanuary 21 Originally staged during the winter of 1972-73, the Geschmossel is one of New England’s oldest citizens’ races. The race originated as a 6-kilometer fun race, and was groomed with a homemade track sled that was pulled by a rope from a grooming machine. Today this 15 km classical style Nordic ski race takes place on the Ammonoosuc trail network at the Bretton Woods Nordic Center, and has grown to attract high-level skiers including members of the United States Ski Team.

Moonlit Snowshoe TourJanuary 26 Experience the wonder of a winter walk on the moonlit snow. Join an AMC Naturalist Guide on a guided full moon snowshoe walk. We will use our senses (and no flashlights) to navigate the trails. SKIFABS Ski Class for WomenJanuary 28 A weekly ski class for women emphasizing instruction and fun. Two groups being offered each morning. Performance Group is geared toward those who are already solid in their basic cross country skiing skills, and are looking to make technical improvements for more efficiency and/or faster speed. The Recreation Group also receives instruction, working on basic skills and becoming more comfortable in varying terrain. Both classes are led by Great Glen’s Ski School Director and Olympian, Sue Wemyss. Participants should have some prior cross country skiing experience, have an interest in learning and improving, and have the desire to be part of a fun and supportive group.
